Things started going wrong for Russ Knight last year.

He found out his girlfriend was cheating on him when she gave birth at the junior prom and left the baby to die in a trashcan. Russ didn't even know she was pregnant. Hell, he thought they were saving themselves for each other.

Now, locked in her padded cell, his girlfriend is screaming that she was just trying to get the faeries to give her baby back. Russ doesn't buy it. But to shut her up, Russ tries a trick the old legends say will work, and the baby starts swearing and begging to be taken back to Faerie. He's got to accept the truth the kid he's raising is a faerie changeling.

The faeries are going to sacrifice the real baby at the Equinox if Russ can't get them to switch again. But the only person who can get the baby back is a biological parent, and Russ' girlfriend certainly can’t help. To save an innocent life, Russ will face ancient faeries with razor-like teeth, wrestle snarling skeleton dogs, and, maybe worst of all, track down every guy his girlfriend was sleeping with last year in the hopes of finding the baby's real father.

And apparently, the father could be half his senior class.

This is a story of growing up and coming to terms with reality, making discoveries that continually surprise you - be they good or bad. Several months after Russ' girlfriend had tried to kill her baby after delivering it on prom night, Russ is a social outcast, Cindi is locked in a mental institution, and Russ' parents sued for, and won, custody of the baby.

Accustomed to being mocked, bullied, or ignored, Russ is startled when a punk/goth chick starts talking to him. Initially Puck is not at all someone Russ would consider to be his type, but as time goes by he finds her more and more attractive. Joining their exclusive group is Marco, a gear head from the poorer side of town. When it comes out that Cindi wasn't crazy, that the baby she tried to kill really is a changeling all kinds of adventures ensue.

Russ matures by leaps and bounds as the book progresses. Marco also makes progress, and Puck, well she's just Puck. I loved that Ms. Chambers named this character Puck, as she puts me in mind of Shakespeare. There are high stakes adventures, and when it comes down to it both Russ and Marco step up to the plate, but for totally different reasons. Even Cindi gets in on the whole maturing act by the end - or at least she seems to. . .

This is a quick and easy read, with some really strong and worthwhile messages woven throughout the story, but without ever getting to be a downer or preachy. It is nice to be able to still find books you read for fun and yet get more than simple entertainment from. Keep up the good work Ms. Chambers.

Once Upon a Changeling eBook V J Chambers Reviews

As you can tell from the Book Description, which is exactly on point, our hero, Russ, aided by a mysterious punk girl and a motor head buddy, has to secure the return of his girlfriend's baby from Faerie and has to transport the foul mouthed changeling he's been stuck with back to Faerie. Your reaction, probably anyone's first reaction, is "Yeah, maybe". Well guess what? This is a sharp, dryly humorous and very knowing piece of work that is consistently entertaining.

The start is not auspicious. The first chapter is vague about why Russ has fallen from grace as a high school goldenboy. Russ is angsty, closed and self-pitying in an annoying teen stoic sort of way. It feels like the book is going to be heavy going, with a lot of teen parent drama tossed in for seasoning.

But, it quickly opens up. Russ meets Gabriella Puck, a knowing goth/punk chick. He tells her, and thus us, his story, and the plot is efficiently set in motion. We confirm that the baby is a changeling early on, so there is no "is it or isn't it" phony suspense. Once we establish that Russ is not the biological father, and thus can't perform any of the rituals to return the baby, and so has to find the real father, we see the two tracks we'll be following. Poor Russ has to ferret out every guy his supposedly pure girlfriend was sleeping with, and has to contend with the dangers and beasts from the land of Faerie. So, we get a high school novel of manners and we also get a really good faerie fantasy/adventure.

Now, here's the best part. The characters are very nicely developed and are engaging and interesting. Russ grows up and drops the angst baloney. Puck is a quicksilver character with a lot of nerve. Marcos, the buddy from auto shop class, shows real class and resilience. Cindi, the disgraced and partly insane girlfriend, moves back and forth as an object of pity and of terror. Even the changeling has some good moments, (a la Baby Herman from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"). The only dead parts involve Russ and his disappointed and perpetually grumpy parents, and those scenes just bring everything to a stop for a page or two. But on the plus side, most of the secondary characters, even those who only have a scene or two as Russ tries to learn how to get the baby back from Faerie, are well conceived and have some nice lines.

And, on top of the strong character development, the author also has a nice touch with snappy dialogue, and some of the conversations involving Russ's attempts to identify the real father are pretty funny. Chambers also has a nice way with the telling detail or the throw-away observation, which means the whole project is much better written than anything else I've seen recently in this genre.

Now, there is enough cursing and enough casual treatment of senior high school sex that this seems to be aimed at an older YA crowd. But, it's not the creepy/power/money sex of "Gossip Girls" type books, and it's not the steamy/phony,heaving breasts/two-hearts-beating-as-one sex in the "Twilight" style. It's just that you have to have sex in order to give birth to a baby at the prom, so there's no way around that one.

The upshot of all this is that the book is lean, crisp, light on its feet, and energetic. Add a nice plot, perceptive writing, engaging characters, and a dry touch, and you have something worth considering. (In that regard, the excerpt on the site is very generous and will get you through the slow opening and into the meat of the book. So it is a fair sample.)

Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to the author or the publisher of this book.
Fun story with likable hero throughout. This was not my favorite chambers book but it had the easy to read, honest, and raw feel to it of her writing. My main problem was that I had pretty much figured out the main twist about 1/4 of the way into the book. However, there were still surprises awaiting me and I enjoyed the book overall!
A fun paranormal young adult novel about a teenage boy stuck with a reputation and child that aren't his. To complicate matters the child he's been raising is actually a faerie stand-in while the original is set to be sacrificed in the fae realm.

Once Upon A Changeling is amusing and fast-paced with an interesting take on faerie and changeling folk lore. The characters are interesting and the high school setting helped fuel the drama. I loved the main character and couldn't help feeling frustrated and indignant on his behalf. The story was both a mystery and adventure as the characters tried to find the child's father and gain entrance to the fae dominion. Once Upon A Changeling is an engaging and enjoyable story with a refreshing take on faerie folk lore.
